Beaches on Martha's Vineyard

Vineyard Haven

1. Lake Tashmoo Town Beach (Herring Creek Beach)Take Daggett Ave. off Franklin St., turn right onto Herring Creek Road (dirt road). Follow to end. Limited parking. Lifeguard on duty. Swimming in the Vineyard Sound or in Lake Tashmoo.

2. Tisbury Town Beach (Owen Little Way Town Beach) Off Main St. at the end of Owen Little Way. Next to the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club.

3. Owen Park Beach Small Sandy harbor beach, near downtown. Has an adjacent play area for kids.

Oak Bluffs

4. Oak Bluffs Town Beach On Nantucket Sound, stretching from the Steamship Authority Dock to the first jetty on the road to Edgartown. Calm water. Lifeguard. Beach starts again along Beach Road towards Edgartown at inlet to Sengekontacket Pond and ends where State Beach (Joseph A. Sylvia State Beach) begins. No lifeguard on this stretch.

Edgartown

5. Joseph A. Sylvia State Beach Two miles of beach with calm water. Lifeguard in “Bend in the Road Beach” section. Parking is available along one side of Beach Road, the bike path runs along the other. Popular spot for families and sunset picnics. Fishing and crabbing along the jetties.

6. Lighthouse & Fuller Street Beach Adjoining beaches beginning at Edgartown Lighthouse, with calm, shallow water. Views of the harbor. No Lifeguard.

7. East Beach Chappaquiddick Cape Pogue Wildlife Refuge. Owned by Trustees of Reservation. Small admission fee to non-members. Open stretch of pristine beach with Atlantic Ocean surf. Plenty of privacy. Smaller ponds for calm swimming.

8. Wasque Reservation Continuation of Trustees of Reservation Beach With separate parking lot. Parking and beach fees for non-members. One of the most popular fishing spots for surf casting. Walking trails along the bluffs overlooking Wasque Point and Pocha Pond.

9. South Beach Edgartown, Norton Point Katama Three mile barrier beach with Atlantic Ocean Surf on one side of dunes and a protected salt pond, Katama Bay on the other. Lifeguards on duty, but swimmers should be aware of undertow. Plenty of parking, also shuttle bus service from downtown Edgartown. Popular spot for families and evening strolls.

Up Island

Mosh Up Beach Aquinnah

10. Long Point Reservation West Tisbury Owned by Trustees of Reservation. Take Waldron’s Bottom Road to end, follow signs. Limited parking with fees for non-members. Wide, sandy south shore beach with big surf. Lifeguard on duty. Extensive walking trails in nearby nature preserve. Pond for calm water swimming. Beach closes 6 p.m.

11. Moshup Beach Endless sand stretching around the cliffs of Aquinnah. Excellent walking and body surfing. Paid parking available, 10 minute walk from beach.

12. Lobsterville Beach Off Lobsterville road facing Vineyard Sound. Calm surf. Popular for fishing, but parking is limited.

13. Menemsha Public Beach Next to the harbor. Small beach facing Vineyard Sound. Good for swimming, lifeguard on duty. This beach is most famous for sunset viewing, but get there early to grab a spot. Take-out dinners available from local eateries.
